Week 1 into the Track & Field season, Shakiya Candelaria has been named NWAC Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week.

Shak jumped a lifetime best of 5.18m (17'0"). That would have hit the previous NWAC qualifying standard of 5.05m. While she was the only competitor in the meet for long jump, she jumped over a foot further then she did in high school while jumping into a headwind. She was also a member of the winning 4x400 team for the RiverHawks.

"Shak's jump was a great asset to her continued efforts this year," said UCC head coach Alan King. "To record a personal best by fourteen inches was great and it will be fun to continue to watch her improve."
