DEPARTMENT: Athletics CLASSIFICATION: Faculty Part-Time
RESPONSIBLE TO: Track & Field Head Coach and Director of Athletics
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Assistant coaches provide a successful, high quality and competitive experience for the student-athletes as it relates to the goals of the department and college. Assistant coaching responsibilities will include pre-season, in-season, post-season and out-of-season responsibilities. Coaching hours vary and may include days, evenings, weekends, travel and other hours as required by the coaching schedule.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assist with coaching, recruiting, training, and supervising student-athletes.
- Maintaining a working knowledge of the rules governing the sport to be coached.
- Maintaining statistics, athletic equipment, facilities and supplies.
- Provide leadership in the personal, athletic and academic development of student-athletes.
- Assist the Head Coach with fund-raising activities.
- Ensure adherence to all Umpqua Community College, Athletics Department, Northwest Athletic Conference, and other regulatory agencies rules, policies and procedures by the program's student-athletes, coaches and staff.
- Develop and implement sports strategy, position assignments and plan practice/training sessions upon request.
- Work cooperatively with the Head Coach and support staff to ensure proper scheduling, field usage and care of facilities.
- Ensure and actively promote positive reinforcement and encouragement.
- Participate and work collaboratively and respectfully in a team environment.
- Confer with students on athletic evaluation results.
- Comply with Oregon Department of Motor Vehicle laws while driving college van/vehicles to and from events; both in the evening and daytime.
- Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- May work in inclement weather
- Ability to lift or transport forty (40) pounds with or without assistance
- Will stand or sit for extended periods of time.
- Safe operation of motor vehicle for travel and field maintenance as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
- One (1) year of competition experience in cross country and/or track and field at the collegiate level OR Two (2) years of experience at the high school level or equivalent.
- Previous coaching experience.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within one (1) month of hire.
- Ability to possess a valid Oregon driver's license and a clean driving record.
- A current and valid driver's license and the ability to pass the online driving test for Oregon Motor Pool and Lane Motor Pool within one (1) month of hire.
- Knowledge/experience in competing or coaching Shot Put, Discus Throw, and Hammer Throw OR Long Jump, High Jump, and Triple Jump.
Preferred (Not Required) Qualifications:
- 2 years of higher education
