Coach CJ Roberts enters her second year as Head Coach for Umpqua Community College in 2023.
As a Pacific Northwest native, Roberts was excited to be returning after 7 years away to continue her passion for coaching. Last year, Coach Roberts led the RiverHawks to their winningest season since 2012, with an overall record of 19-15 (.559) and a conference record of 8-8 (.500). As a team, they were ranked top half in all statistical categories (Top 5 in over half) in the NWAC with 5 total players earning conference accolades as well as 4 continuing on to play at the next level. Locally, Roberts is in her 2nd year as the Assistant Club Director for Rise Volleyball Club to help provide opportunities for local athletes to improve, compete, and learn.
Prior to UCC, Coach Roberts spent two seasons as the Assistant Volleyball Coach for Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA. During her time with NSU, she helped lead them to 2 conference tournament appearances as well as helping NSU earn one 1 of the 20 at-large bids to the 2019 NIVC Tournament, only awarded to the best conference finishers not playing in the NCAA tournament. Coach Roberts ended her time at NSU guiding athletes to many accolades including including All-SLC (5 selections), 2019 SLC Player of the Year, All-Academic SLC (4 recognitions), All-Louisiana Selections (5 recognitions), and 2019 LSWA Player of the Year. Roberts final record at NSU was 32-28 Overall and 19-3 Conference.
After NSU, Coach Roberts helped begin the program at Providence Academy (Rogers, AR) as the Head Junior High Coach and Assistant High School Coach for 2 seasons. Coach Roberts also coached for (and later joined the staff at) Ozark Juniors Volleyball Club, a top club in the nation, for 3 years.
Roberts attended Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, TX where she played 3 seasons from 2015-2017 while earning her undergraduate degree. Roberts was a middle blocker for PVAMU after spending her freshman year as a 6-rotation outside hitter. As a freshman, she was named SWAC Newcomer of the Year, made it into every match for the Panthers and was the only player to eclipse over 100 kills and 100 digs during the season. While competing at PVAMU, she ranked top 5 in hitting for the SWAC all 3 years and received All-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors and was a recipient of the 2017 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award.
Roberts started coaching as a sophomore in high school. Through high school she helped run and coach her local youth program. She coached at her home club (LC Spikers) for 2 seasons. While attending and playing for Prairie View A&M University, she was the head coach and club president for the PVAMU Club Volleyball team for two years. After graduating from PVAMU, Roberts moved on to pursue her graduate degree at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA.
Roberts has participated in athletics from the young age of 6. She was a 4-sport varsity athlete at Mossyrock High School in volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field. Roberts received honors for both basketball and volleyball through high school. Her volleyball accolades include All-Conference, All-State, All-Area and Powerful Examples of Excellence. Roberts also led her team to state her sophomore and senior season. Although she received collegiate scholarship offers for volleyball, basketball, and track, she chose to continue her volleyball career in college.
Coach Roberts (previously Hensch) is originally from Mossyrock, WA. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Prairie View A&M University in 2018 and her Master of Science in Sports Administration from Northwestern State University in 2019. Before taking over the RiverHawks program, Roberts worked at Ozark Juniors Volleyball Club as the Director of Marketing and Programs and helped lead recruiting classes for the club. Outside of volleyball, Coach CJ enjoys concerts, traveling, fishing, lake days, game nights, and playing basketball with her husband, Justin and playing with their dogs, Bob and Beyla.
