Coach Daniel Leeworthy enters his 22nd season as a College Basketball Coach, and his 14th Season as Head Coach at Umpqua Community College.  His career wins currently stand at 242, making him the all-time winningest Coach in program history. His Record over the last 7 seasons is an impressive 144-46, and 236-101 since his first recruiting class.

His Coaching experience includes NCAA Division 1 at Ohio University, and Division 2 institutions at Western Colorado University and BYU-Hawaii. 

During his tenure at UCC, Coach Leeworthy has built the program into a perennial contender and has had over 40 players transfer to NCAA D1, D2, D3, and the top NAIA programs in the nation to play.

Highlights at Umpqua

  • Named Head Coach in September 2013 at age 32. Making him the first-ever Australian College Men’s Head Coach
  • 3 South Region Championships in the last 9 Seasons
  • UCC has averaged 86 points per game, and held teams to 39% FG Defense
  • 3 Coach of the Year Awards, 3 MVPs, 4 Defensive Players of the Year
  • Team G.P.A consistently between 3.5-3.8
  • 2025-26 season, the team went 25-5 and won the Southern Region Championship.  They were #1 in defense, holding teams to a 37% FG percentage. Brayden Whitehead led the NWAC in Blocks per game. The team had over 200 service hours.
  • 2021-22 season, the team went 22-5 and were Runners-up in the Southern Region. Nathan Webb, South Region MVP
  • 2020-21 season, the team went 16-1 and won the Southern Region Championship. The team averaged a staggering 92.5 points per game
  • 2019-20 season the team had a 25-4 Record, averaged 90.6 points (53% Fg’s), and held teams to a 38% Defensive Field Goal percentage
  • 2016-17 Season had an overall record of 20-10.  They won the Southern region championship, went to the final four, and finished 3rd overall. Grant Ellison, South Region MVP
  • In 2015, with Leeworthy’s first recruiting class intact, UCC recorded the 2nd biggest turnaround in program history, going from 6 to 19 wins.  This feat was capped off by the team returning to the NWAC playoffs for the first time in 7 years. 
  • UCC's win/loss record for the 5 yrs before Leeworthy's 1st recruiting class was 34-95.

Before Umpqua

  • 2009-2013 – Assistant Coach at Western Colorado University (4 Seasons). 

From 2012-13, the team recorded, for the first time in 15 years, consecutive seasons of double-digit conference wins. This feat was capped off by beating #3 Metro State.

  • 2007-2009 – Graduate Assistant/Operations & Video Coordinator at Ohio University (2 Seasons). 

His responsibilities included basketball operations, scouting, video coordination, and camp director. The Bobcats turned in a 20-win Season in 2007-08 and earned a berth in the inaugural CBI. He worked with several all-conference players, as well as Mike Allen, who led the MAC in Assists.  He also assisted in the recruiting of the 2009 class that would become one of the most successful mid-major recruiting classes ever. The class would go on to win 3 Conference Championships and make 2 NCAA tournaments, including a run to the Sweet Sixteen.

  • 2005-2007 – Assistant Coach/Administrative Assistant at BYU Hawaii (2 Seasons). 

In both seasons, the Seasiders finished second in the PacWest Conference. In 2006-07, he helped guide the Seasiders to a 20-8 record and a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament. He also coached the then-freshmen of the year Lucas Alves, and winner of the Daktronics DII 2008-09 player of the year.

Other Achievements

In addition to these feats, Leeworthy has coached 40 plus collegiate players to go on to play professionally and Coached with many current and former NCAA D1 Head Coaches such as Chris Holtmann (DePaul, Ohio State, Butler, Gardner-Webb), John Groce (Charleston, Akron, Illinois, Ohio), Dustin Ford (Akron), Kevin Kuwik (Army), Bacari Alexander (Detroit), and Tim O’Shea (Bryant, Ohio).  He has 4 Former Players who are assistant coaches at the D1 level (Brock Gilbert - Utah Tech, Steve Aldridge - San Diego, Mike Allen – Charleston, Tommy Freeman - Maine, and 1 who is working in the front office of the Orlando Magic – Adetunji Adedipe).  He served two years as a Missionary in the Philippines and speaks multiple languages. 

He and his wife, the former Lindsay Yamauchi of Hawaii, have three boys, Jaron (18, currently serving a 2-year Mission in Fiji), Madsen (14), and Asher (8).
